The wedding party
Joy abounding
Bright and perfect autumn day
Picture-taking in the park
When late the bridegroom chanced to see
An old man
Sitting
On a bench
Wooden and alone
And went to him
To ask of him
For some bonnie news.
But he just smiled and turned his head
And this is what the grey beard said:
“Ugly,” Americans once were called
Make America bonnie again
Prosperity’s sin is not to share
Make America bonnie again
When eyes can see the world whole
Make America bonnie again
And hearts can feel the world healed
Make America bonnie again
When winds can rain a mountain flood
Make America bonnie again
And children active gunners fear
Make America bonnie again
When lovers cry and poets dream
Make America bonnie again
And writers write and church bells scream
Make America bonnie again
When prayers read a book of love
Make America bonnie again
And search the truth in skies above
Make America bonnie again
They worship well who love full well
Make America bonnie again
Both man and bird and beast
Make America bonnie again
And pray the best who love the best
Make America bonnie again
All things both great and small
Make America bonnie again, for a while
And oft’ recall what was revealed
Make America bonnie again
The day our Captain died.
O Captain! my Captain, our fearful trip is done
But I with mournful tread
Walk the deck my Captain lies
Fallen cold and dead.
