Before lights.

What’s the name of this secret club again?
Where we’re having dinner?
WILLIAM BUTLER
“Word.”
KATE
What “World?”
WILLIAM BUTLER
No. “Word.” Just “Word.”
Like, may I have a private word with you?
KATE
Oh. I’ve never heard of “Word.”
Or any private club with a name like that. Sounds like a bookseller’s.
WILLIAM BUTLER
Maybe they haven’t heard of us either….
Except, of course, Gordon assured me that he would be telling them.
And promised we would be properly received.
KATE
We’ll see.
Pause.
Lights rise. KATE and WILLIAM BUTLER are seated at a table at Word. First course has been served, with drinks. KATE is drinking gin; WILLIAM BUTLER, Veuve Cliquot brut.
